Firstly it is important that we understand what EMF means and why they are believed to be so important when
conducting an investigation of a haunted location. The abbreviation; EMF stands for electromagnetic field.
Electromagnetic fields are present wherever there is an electrical charge either natural or artificial.
If we break down all matter into particles we would find that they consist of electrical charges (electron,
protons and neutrons). Each and every one of us has a small electrical charge and therefore emits a small
EMF signal (only detected by a very sensitive DC meter). We are all surrounded by electrical fields which
are given off by all of the electrical appliances, and power cables which surround us. This means that in
many circumstances there is going to be a background EMF present when we are conducting an investigation.
The aside from the video camera EMF meters are possibly the first electronic instrument used for hunting the
presence of ghosts. Most EMF meters use the mG (milliGauss) unit as the measurement of the Electromagnetic
field the range and capability of EMF meters varies greatly meter by meter. There is a wide range of EMF
meters to suit every budget. Many investigators arm themselves with several different models so that they
have a suitable tool for every situation. EMF meters which have an analogue needle display are the most
popular type of EMF meter and most responsive meters for conducting paranormal investigations. The Gauss
Master EMF meter is by far the most established meter being used. The more advanced TriField EMF meters
offer excellent accuracy and reliability. Most EMF meters are for detecting AC (alternating current)
electromagnetic fields such as those generated by artificial means. Some meters such as the TriField Natural
EM meter are designed to ignore these artificial fields and detect DC (direct current) such as emitted
naturally by ourselves and making these an ideal meter for the serious investigator wishing to rule out all
of the distractions of AC fields.
The theory behind EMFs and paranormal activity is one which is much debated amongst investigators. It is
believed that ghosts could give off electromagnetic fields or by simply interacting with artificial fields
present around us, they act as a catalyst which we are looking to detect when conducting an investigation.
The most widely accepted theory is that the presence of ghosts causes an unexpected and often sudden change
or fluctuation of EMF. Artificial sources of EMF usually remain constant allowing us to easily notice a
fluctuation when one occurs.
Every location is different and paranormal activity can affect EMF readings in different ways. There is
no definitive reading that indicates the presence of a ghost, therefore in order to conduct an investigation
with an EMF meter it is important that we first conduct a baseline test of the location to account for the
background EMF which we mentioned a moment ago. The best method of doing this is to draw a diagram of the
location marking the background EMF readings which we obtain in different parts of the location. Using a
different coloured pen or pencil for readings taken at different times during the investigation will help
us analyse the results when we return home. Once we have completed this baseline investigation we are able
to determine when a change occurs which may have been caused by the presence of a ghost. Ghosts may have
either a positive or negative effect on the EMF causing the needle on the EMF meter to either jump upwards
on the scale or drop down. When we detect a fluctuation in EMF is a good idea to take a photograph or video
the location to hopefully capture activity which our eyes are unable to detect. Through experience of using
your EMF meter during several investigations you will learn to identify signs of paranormal activity.
The EMF meter has played an important role in far too many successful investigations to be ignored making
it one of the most trusted tools of the paranormal investigator. Go out there and make the most of your
EMF meter. Using it effectively will get you some very interesting results.
