Dowsing Rods for Paranormal Research

The Dowsing Rod is one of the most basic and inexpensive tools which form part of every dedicated paranormal investigators armoury.

Dowsing rods can be described as two long pieces of metal bar, approximately 5mm in diameter with about 10cm of each end bent to form a right angle and serve as handles. They may look very simple (they are) however using them and interpreting their reactions requires concentration and practice. Traditionally dowsing rods were used primarily to detect the presence of water. However, using them for paranormal research is also has become a popular use. One thing is for certain; whatever you are looking for, you will require steady hands to operate them.

In order to use your dowsing rods effectively it will be necessary to familiarise yourself and gain an understanding of how they react when in your hands. The most natural question to ask is: "What will they do when a spirit is present?" The rods may cross over each other or move apart from each other by a significant amount. You should hold the rods about 30 to 40 cm apart and before you begin, you should establish what indicates a 'yes' and what indicates a 'no'. Generally the rods will cross to indicate a 'yes' and move apart to indicate a 'no'. However some rod/user combinations occasionally react differently to the norm. By holding the rods in your hands ask them to show you a 'yes'. The signal which it gives you will then be the basis for you to start looking for other things. Try not to be too ambitious when you first hold the rods in you hands as this is a tool where the old saying: "practice makes perfect" applies.

It is believed that the quality of the dowsing rods will make significant changes to the results which you will obtain when using them. It is a good idea to have a pair of rods that are as identical to each other as possible e.g. being the same length, diameter and weight. It is possible experiment using old wire coat hangers if you wish to get started right away. Please ensure that when you make your own rods, you ensure that the sharp cut edges are either smoothed using a file or masked using some tape. Dowsing Rods that are available to buy come in a variety of lengths and types of metal. Generally they are either 10 to 16 inches long (approx 25cm to 40cm) and made of either stainless steel or copper.

The biggest difficulty when using dowsing rods is ensuring that you do not cause them to move together or cross simply by your movements or as a result of air movement. It can be quite a challenge holding the dowsing rods in the correct manner. However once you have mastered the technique, they can be a very entertaining tool to use. When you walk with the rods in your hands you should do so in a steady slow walk to avoid bobbing around too much. It is a very strange sensation seeing the dowsing rods move from being parallel to each other to being crossed and back again when performing an investigation and you are pretty certain that it is not you. When you get familiar with using the dowsing rods you will become aware of the forces acting between them and can sense them attract and repel against each other. In truth the use of dowsing rods is a very spiritual task, requiring communication between the user and the rods to locate what you are looking for. For example you would visualise or say what you are looking for and let the rods guide you. The rods act as amplifiers connecting the user to the spirit world.

Dowsing is one of the oldest tools used for detection of the paranormal with lots of history. It is surely worth giving them a try; they have been around since around 500BC (possibly sooner). The results which such a simple yet effective tool provides have stood the test of time.
