One of the disadvantages which we face as humans is that we have limited hearing ability. The frequency range which our ears detect is relatively narrow compared with other mammals. We struggle to hear high frequency sounds, whereas mans best friend has far greater hearing capabilities. This is possibly why a dog's ability to sense the paranormal is believed to be greater than our own. By using the appropriate audio enhancers we can extend our ability and hear sounds which we would otherwise have been completely unaware of.
Audio enhancers have been around for quite some time. Designed with the hard or hearing in mind, bird watchers or even bat conservationists. There are various models which you can use each having slightly different capabilities; meaning that there is sometimes the need to use more than one device on an investigation. Typically you will come across audio enhancers which simply provide amplification of the sounds around you e.g. a gain of 140dB (dB stands for decibels which is the unit for measuring sound levels). These audio enhancers are a fantastic way of hearing sounds which were far to quiet for you to detect without the enhancer. When conducting an investigation with one of these enhancers you will be able to detect even the smallest sound or creaking of floor boards etc. It therefore goes without saying that it would not be a good idea to use one of these enhancers in a naturally noisy environment as you will hear far too much background noise e.g. by a busy road. If the location is very quiet you can capture some fascinating sounds. You can often further enhance your hearing amplifier by making a cone with some card to focus more sound onto the microphone.
You may choose to record the output from your audio enhancer so that you can review the results when you return home. Simply obtain a headphone splitter to allow you to listen and record from the enhancer at the same time. Using some of the methods which we discussed in part 5 you can discover sounds which you missed when carrying out the investigation.
There are dedicated audio enhancers which have been developed for listening to ultrasonic sound frequencies. These devices are typically designed for the detection bats as they use ultrasonic sound to navigate when they fly and find their prey. These devices slow down the frequency of the sound and reproduce them at a frequency which is audible to our ears. These devices are certainly worth experimenting with, to provide you with an extra dimension when performing investigations. You would not wish to miss something simply because it was outside of our natural hearing range.
If you have found yourself wishing to expand on your investigation tool kit it could be worth acquiring some audio enhancers to take on your next investigation. You will be fascinated by the sounds that you hear and hopefully produce some interesting results. Do not be limited by your natural senses. When the paranormal is involved, any advantage which we can give ourselves in enhancing our senses, the greater our chances of getting the results we desire.
